Universal Robots delivers flexibility, profitability and productivity

210727_URUniversal Robots partnered with integrator Olympus Technologies to deliver a new automated solution for E&O Laboratories, the UK’s largest privately owned manufacturer of ready-to-use culture media. Due to the delicate nature of E&O Laboratories’ products, Olympus Technologies chose Universal Robots’ collaborative robots (cobots), due to their flexibility and ability to handle a diverse range of items.

Using a UR5e cobot and a standard vacuum gripper, Olympus Technologies designed a custom automated solution that could handle sleeve-wrapped bio-culture packs without damaging them. Due to the way the product is presented by E&O’s existing machinery, the cobot is programmed to turn over each batch of products, compress them and transfer them to a packing basket. The new solution allows 3 packs a pick and 1 pick every 12 seconds, resulting in 15 packs a minute.

Mark Gray, Universal Robots country manager for the UK and Ireland, said: “We were delighted to be Olympus Technologies’ first choice for creating E&O Laboratories’ brand-new automated solution. Our integrators are our trusted partners, and we together work closely to deliver top-quality automation to a range of businesses in a diverse range of sectors, whether they’re just getting started with cobots, or they’ve been using them for a long-time.”

Eddie Scott, quality director at E&O Laboratories, said: “E&O’s strategy has always been to work in close collaboration with suppliers and service contracts. Our relationship with Olympus Technologies has allowed us to step into the world of innovation and robotics, with Olympus Technologies delivering an exceptional bespoke solution, which has greatly benefitted our business productivity and allowed us to continue to be highly competitive in the market place” said

Adam Swallow, director at Olympus Technologies said: “We strive to provide high-quality, bespoke solutions for our customers. E&O Laboratories was looking to implement automation for the first time, so we worked closely together to find the best solution for their unique business needs. We worked closely with Universal Robots to deliver above and beyond customer expectations.”
