Robotics Institute Germany established
The Robotics Institute Germany (RIG), jointly established by Germany’s leading robotics centres, is to become the central contact point for robotics in Germany. At the ‘AI-based Robotics 2024′ conference in Berlin, Professor Angela Schoellig from the consortium leader, the Technical University of Munich (TUM), and RIG spokesperson Professor Tamim Asfour from the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) presented the RIG concept for AI-based robotics.
The project will be funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) for the next four years – a total of 20 million euros. The five strategic goals at the centre of the project will focus on strengthening the international visibility of robotics in Germany, targeted talent promotion and the transfer of research results.
“I am delighted that we have succeeded together in establishing a robotics network with such strong partners from universities and non-university institutions for this pioneering AI-based robotics concept,” says Schoellig. “The RIG is a historic initiative that comes at exactly the right time. We are responding to current trends in the USA, for example, where many well-known companies are investing heavily in AI-based robotics. We are doing this with our program, which is geared towards cutting-edge research and talent.”
Intelligent robotics solutions will not only transform the economy, but also reshape our lives. This is because they will influence healthcare, education, mobility solutions and the environmental sector in equal measure. The RIG aims to use robotics to build on innovations in the chemical, pharmaceutical and automotive industries.
