The dynamic welding industry market is growing year on year. The increasing shortage of welding expertise and the increasing demand for flexible and safe welding machines is also forcing the technology to continue to innovate. This is why Omron and AWL have combined forces and decided to enter into a global partnership to develop and distribute a truly mature cobot welding solution: Qube.

AWL has expertise relating to process improvements and welding, while Omron’s strength lies in automation solutions that support humans and machines. This partnership has resulted in the development of this flexible cobot welding cell.

“Up until now there were really only two robot welding methods used in the automation industry: high-end robot welding cells or low-threshold cobots mounted on a pedestal,” says Tom Vrugteveen, sales engineer at AWL.

“The robot welding cell is highly suitable for producing large numbers, but for many companies the investment is too high. By contrast, cobots mounted on a pedestal are the best option for smaller series. But what if as producer you fall in this category, and you manufacture series of between 100 and 1,000 units and this series furthermore contains various product types? Or what if you would be able to grow due to the rising demand for products, but you only have a limited number of welding specialists in-house? This is exactly where the challenge lies. AWL has the perfect solution: Qube – a cobot welding cell.”

Stephan Pruiksma, innovation manager at Omron Benelux adds: “With Qube anyone without welding experience can flexibly, efficiently and safely weld, or teach the cobot to weld, in 15 minutes. Using a simple operating panel, you can program the cobot in a jiffy, after which production can be started. Furthermore, robots and employees can now work side by side in an efficient way, which never before was possible in the world of welding for safety reasons.”

Each year ABB Robotics celebrates the contributions and successes of their Value Providers and Customers at their Value Provider Conferences and Customer Days—events that give them their partners intimate access to the newest technology via live robotics demonstrations, business updates and breakout sessions. ABB takes the opportunity at these events to hand out awards to partners whose contributions have resulted in unique and innovative robotic automation solutions and have made an especially positive impact on ABB Robotics’ ability to reach more end-customers.

AWL-Techniek was one of six partners to win an award at this year’s award ceremony. As a leader in automated welding technology with many years of engineering experience, AWL has rightfully carved out the space in the world of industrial automation. AWL’s creative machine concepts greatly contribute to the effectiveness, reliability, ergonomics, machine intelligence and safety of some of the world’s most advanced welding systems.

AWL-Techniek was proud to receive the award ‘Outstanding sales and partnership with ABB to attain the 250.000 robots milestone’ from ABB Robotics, which was reached out by the president of ABB Robotics, Per Vegard Nersith. AWL chief technical officer Brand van’t Hof says: “We look forward to continuing our collaboration with ABB Robotics into the future – we are a good combination.”

It was not the first time that AWL has won awards. In 2011 it also received from ABB Robotics an award for the ‘Best achievement in long term partnership and business development in welding solutions’.
