Autonomous robotics course now on offer
With its MEng (Hons) Autonomous Robotics degree already attracting applications from students, NMITE has launched an Introduction to Robotic Operating Systems (ROS2) course designed for locally based companies who have an involvement or interest in autonomous systems, unmanned platforms, or robotics.
The first module of the series, Fundamentals and Applications, is an eight-week course (run in two-hour online sessions) that will start on Monday 6 July and is led by Professor Alexandru Stancu who leads the MEng degree programme. The course introduces attendees to Robotic Operating Systems (ROS2), the language that enables a robot to navigate, perceive, and act. Participants will learn to use ROS2 and, by the end of the programme, will have the practical confidence to implement and apply it to the kinds of problems that define modern robotics.
Commenting on the new course, Professor Stancu said “We believe there are lots of companies locally who will find this incredibly useful in developing their capabilities across both defence and commercial sectors. I’m very much looking forward to helping build the autonomous robotics ecosystem in Herefordshire and already have a follow-up module in design to help advance these skills even further.”
NMITE has been running Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programmes and short courses for local individuals and businesses since 2020 and estimates it has supplied 9,000 hours of professional development and training to a minimum of 350 local individuals. “It’s great to have a new, cutting-edge course to offer” says Sam Lewis, Director of People and Operations at NMITE. “This builds on our over fifteen [how many you want to say are on offer] courses, bespoke courses and CPD training which is really helping improve the skills of people local to NMITE. Along with our military transition courses, we are helping enhance and develop individual and leadership skills within Herefordshire businesses, SMEs and third sector organisations.”
Other short courses on offer from NMITE
Run from NMITE’s Centre for Advanced Timber Technology (CATT) are courses which help meet current industry needs, focusing on climate and better building methods such as the Low-Carbon Passport short course, an industry-recognised accreditation delivered on behalf of BE-ST, currently available for free registration.
Delivered via NMITE’s Centre for Innovation and Future Skills (CIFS), are courses with a focus on the skills of the future, designed to upskill and reskill individuals. The Leadership Series of courses includes, for example, Principle Led Leadership; Leading Change; Influence and Emotional Intelligence; Inclusive Leadership & Psychological safety.
Finally, there is the newly announced Manufacturing and Systems Optimisation course, development in consultation with industry and part-funded by Malvern Hills District Council, and will be delivered over 14 weeks, starting on 23 October 2026.
